What Pond Construction Actually Involves

Building a pond is a soil problem before it is a digging problem. The first question is always whether the ground will hold water — which means finding clay of adequate depth and quality in the basin and the dam footprint, usually by digging test pits before anything is committed. Sandy or gravelly seams will drain a pond no matter how well it is shaped. The second question is the watershed: how much land drains into the site, because too little contributing area leaves the pond chronically low and too much makes the spillway design critical. From there it is earthmoving with specific requirements. Topsoil and organic material get stripped from the dam footprint, and a core trench is cut into competent clay and backfilled with compacted clay — this key is what stops water tracking under the dam, and skipping it is the most common reason dams seep. The embankment is then built in compacted lifts of clay-rich material, with side slopes flat enough to stay stable and be mowable. The basin is excavated to depth, with deeper water where fish need to hold through a hot summer. A principal spillway pipe handles routine flow and often includes an anti-seep collar; an emergency spillway is cut into undisturbed ground at the side to carry flood flows around the dam rather than over it. Finally the disturbed surfaces are shaped, seeded, and stabilized. Restoration work runs a similar sequence in reverse — accumulated silt removed, the basin re-deepened, dam and spillway defects repaired.

Step 1 — We Dig Test Pits Before We Talk About Shape

The first visit is about soil, not aesthetics. We dig test pits in the proposed basin and dam footprint to see what the profile actually holds — how deep the clay runs, whether there are sand or gravel seams that will leak, and where competent material for the embankment is going to come from. Occasionally this conversation ends with us recommending a different location on the property, or a liner, or that the site is not worth the money. It is a great deal cheaper to hear that now.

Step 2 — We Size the Pond to the Watershed

We work out how much land drains to the site and how much runoff that produces in a normal year, then size the pond and its spillways to match. Too little watershed and the pond never fills or draws down badly every summer; too much and the emergency spillway has to be substantially larger than most people expect. This calculation also determines the pipe size for the principal spillway. Ponds fail from underbuilt spillways far more often than from anything that happens in the basin.

Step 3 — We Cut the Core Trench and Build the Dam in Lifts

Topsoil and organics come off the dam footprint entirely, then a core trench is excavated into competent clay along the centerline and backfilled with compacted clay. That key prevents seepage tracking underneath the embankment. The dam is built in compacted lifts at proper moisture, with slopes flat enough to be stable and mowable. This is slow work, and it determines whether the structure is still there in thirty years.

Step 4 — We Excavate the Basin and Set the Spillways

The basin is dug to the depths agreed, with deeper holes where fish need to survive an August, and the edges shaped — some shallow shelf for wildlife and vegetation, steeper margins where you want less rooted growth. The principal spillway pipe is installed at the designed elevation with anti-seep protection, and the emergency spillway is cut into undisturbed ground to one side, wide and low enough to pass flood flow around the dam. Water that overtops a dam destroys it; that is what the emergency spillway exists to prevent.

Step 5 — We Shape, Seed, and Let It Fill

Disturbed ground gets shaped, topsoiled, and seeded so the embankment establishes cover before the first heavy rain works on it. Then it fills — how fast depends entirely on rainfall, and a new pond in this country may take a season or more to reach full pool. We tell you what to expect rather than leaving you wondering. This is genuinely good pond country, which is why there are so many stock tanks here. Blackland Prairie clay is close to ideal basin material — it seals well and holds water — and that is a real advantage over the sandier and rockier parts of Texas where liners and imported clay become necessary. The caution locally is transitional ground: toward the Bois d’Arc Creek bottoms, the Caddo National Grassland, and the post oak country in the northeast of the county, sand seams appear in the profile and a site that looks identical to a good one may leak. That is exactly what test pits are for. Many of the older tanks we restore around Lake Bonham and along FM 273 were built in the 1950s and 60s without core trenches or adequate spillways, and they are now shallow, silted, and seeping.

Texas water law is unusually favorable to landowners here, and it is worth knowing where the lines are. Under Texas Water Code Section 11.142, a landowner may generally build a pond on their own property storing up to 200 acre-feet for domestic, livestock, fish, and wildlife purposes without obtaining a permit from TCEQ — Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s guide A Pond to Call My Own lays out the exemption and its limits clearly. Commercial use of the impounded water, and dams above certain height and storage thresholds, move a project into permitted and engineered territory. How much does it cost to build a pond?

Pond cost is driven by excavated volume, dam size, and soil conditions more than by surface acres. A small stock tank in good clay on favorable terrain is a fundamentally different project from a multi-acre pond needing a substantial embankment and engineered spillway. Costs climb sharply if suitable clay has to be hauled in or a liner becomes necessary, which is why the test pits at the start matter financially as well as technically. Restoration and dredging of an existing pond is typically less than new construction, though heavily silted tanks can surprise.

Texas Water Code Section 11.142 allows a landowner to construct a dam or reservoir on their own property with normal storage of up to 200 acre-feet for domestic and livestock purposes without a TCEQ permit, with a parallel provision covering fish and wildlife purposes on qualifying land. That covers essentially every farm pond. The exemption does not extend to commercial operations, and impoundments above certain height and storage thresholds fall under TCEQ dam safety regulation with engineering requirements attached. In North Texas, a pond intended to hold fish through summer generally needs meaningful depth in at least part of the basin so water stays cool and oxygenated when the surface heats and evaporation runs hard. Shallow water across an entire pond promotes heavy vegetation growth and heat stress, and can push a tank close to dry in a bad August. Yes, and it is a large part of our pond work. Older tanks fill with silt washed in from the watershed over decades, losing depth and volume until they go shallow, warm, and weedy. Restoration involves drawing the pond down, removing accumulated sediment, re-excavating to depth, and repairing dam and spillway defects at the same time — the dry period is the only practical opportunity to fix an embankment. Removed silt is often excellent material for spreading elsewhere on the property. Timing usually means working in a dry stretch.
